Over the past few months, the COVID-19 pandemic has transmitted rapidly, interrupting most students’ education in different parts of Vietnam. However, with an increasing number of new technologies, education is no longer confined to just the classroom. In the 21st century, self-studying is one of the most important skills for those who wish to master a new skill or complement formal education. In preparation for the new school year, below are some useful tips of self-studying English at home.
- STEP 1 – Set realistic goals: Setting work goals for yourself, ones that realistically fit in with your capacity and other commitments, is of the utmost importance when creating self-study habits. Do not force yourself too much by assigning a certain amount of workload each week. You can adjust how much you learn, depending on the hectic schedule in any given week. Bear in mind to give yourself some time to refresh your minds.
- STEP 2 – Find what works for you: There are many self-learning techniques on the Internet, but finding which method suits you is more important. For example, Kolb (1984) published the model of learning including 4 stages: concrete learning, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization and active experimentation. Discover what works best for you and stick with it.
- STEP 3 – Review the material the same day you learn: Make sure you review all the material and notes you take in an online class. This way helps strengthen what you have learned and makes your brain resonate. As a result, reviewing decreases the need of cramming in the future.
- STEP 4 – Prepare and maintain your study environment: When learning remotely, it is crucial to create a study space for yourself. By setting aside and decorating your table or desk, you will be mentally prepared to learn whenever you enter the place.
Self-study is a valuable way to learn in the current situation. We hope that the guidance will facilitate your home-based language learning process and you can see a drastic improvement in your academic performance, material understanding and self-confidence.
